About our trip to Russia...
LP's Founder Beverly DeCer, and LP's Producer Clemente D'Alessio
visited Moscow and St. Petersburg in September 2004. Our trip was very
successful, taking us to the leading theatres in Russia and visiting
with key staff members and Directors.
Our meeting with the ever charismatic
Sergei Markov, Director of the Russian National Orchestra was truly
exciting. Within a few minutes we were discussing a number of possible
global collaborations. The RNO Grammy Award winning CD, "Peter
and the Wolf," narrated by Sophia Loren, Bill Clinton, and
Mikhail Gorbachov has been an international success. Markov's Russian
National Orchestra is a prime candidate for an LP venture.
We had a beautiful Georgian dinner with Peter Cheremushkin and Tanya Senkevich. Peter happens to be the childhood friend of Aleksander
Vedernikov, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of
the Bolshoi Theatre. We had a midnight meeting with Mr. Vedernikov
before he was off to conduct in Italy. His assistant, Katya Novikova,
gave us a private tour of both stages at the Bolshoi and the immense
"city" that supports it. The "big stage" will
be closing in 2005 for renovations. LP intends to broadcast ballet
and opera offerings from the Bolshoi, one of the most famous theatres
in the world. Their legendary skill and artistic sophistication
is evident in their dedication to excellence. We were frustrated
that we could not book the Bolshoi's upcoming performances on the
spot. Many of these productions have never been seen in the west.
The next day, we met with UNESCO's staff in Moscow. UNESCO is consulting
with the Bolshoi on their fundraising efforts. We discussed the
projects that the Moscow office is currently undertaking and possible
future collaborations with UNESCO's Delphi Competition, a childrens'
classical arts competition. Liubava Moreva, National Officer of
Culture, provided contacts with the American office of UNESCO in
Paris to explore the feasibility of beginning a partnership with
LP.
One unexpected delight was attending Van Cliburn's glorious concert
in honor of the victims of the Beslan tragedy. We sat in the first
row in the stageside box, courtesy of the Moscow Conservatory, where
Van Cliburn won the Tchaikowski International Piano Competition
in 1958, the first American ever to win. The love and respect that
the Moscow audience had for Mr. Cliburn was awe inspiring. They
stood 20 deep at the edge of the stage holding flowers and cameras,
paying tribute to a hero they had fallen in love wth years before.
To this day, he is a national hero in Russia. We were fortunate
to meet Mr. Cliburn after his riveting performance. Beverly received
a memorable embrace when she told him that she was from Philadelphia.
We also heard "Hi Clem!" while backstage from Constantine
Orbellian, the concert's conductor. What a small world, what a night!
In St. Petersburg we visited the Mariinsky Theatre. The company
was out of season. Renovations were being done to restore the beauty
and opulence of one of the most sumptuous theatres in Russia. Maestro
Gergiev was in New York at that time and we were not able to continue
our discussions with him during our visit.
Our meeting with Julia Strizhak, assistant director of the St. Petersburg
Philharmonia was most promising and another possibility for broadcasts.
At the time of our visit, they were anticipating the opening concert
of their newly installed pipe organ. The preparations were in place
for their Winter Festival, which takes place during the New Years
holiday. This year the festival will open with a performance by
the American pianist, Andre Watts.
We were lucky enough to have a personal tour of the Mussorgsky Opera
Theatre given by their archivist. The Mussorgsky Theatre was the
Czar'soriginal and favorite theatre. We attended that evening's
perfomance of the ballet, "Cinderella." It was a stunning
performance. It seemed like we were looking into a magical kinoscope.
The stage was intimate, the cast was picture perfect, as were the
costumes.
Our last meeting was well worth the entire trip. We met Boris Eifman,
Russia's esteemed ballet choeographer, at his St. Petersburg studio.
His ballets are performed in Russia and around the world, including
by the New York City Ballet. LP would like to present his troupe
as one of our first performance broadcasts. Mr. Eifman's new theatre,
"Palace of Ballet," will open in 2008. It is one of the
most exciting prospects on our horizon. The theatre will house three
separate companies: one to present classical and historical recreations
of Marius Pepita - the father
of ballet, a second company to present Eifman's ballets, and a third
company devoted to avant garde and athletic ballet. A very exciting
prospect indeed, and LP wants to broadcast all the riches of Boris
Eifman's genius of ballet!
The American Consulate in St. Petersburg introduced us to the former
US dipomat to Russia, Paul R. Smith, now retired but working for
the State Department. Due to Paul's deep interest in Russia, he
has been helping with networking LP and has become a trusted advisor.
Please take a moment to see a few pictures from our September trip,
on exhibit in LP's Gallery!
We thank all those who met with us and made our trip to Russia a
very memorable one. We hope to be back soon to arrange for broadcasts
for the US and international television.
