Russia
has given birth to such geniuses of the classical arts as Tchaikovsky,
Prokofiev, Borodin, Shostokovich, Stravinsky, Dyaghilev, Balanchine,
Makarova, Nureyev,and Baryshnikov, to name but a few. Today the arts
scene is as vibrant and thriving.
- The Bolshoi theatre closed the "original stage" for renovation and is expected to reopen in 2009. The ballet troupe is still performing on the "New Stage," just scross the street.
- The Mariinsky Theatre is overseen by the internationally
popular Valery Gergiev. The Kirov Ballet and Opera performs
traditional and innovative productions at the Mariinsky
where "The Nutcracker" was first performed.
- The ballet choreographer, Boris Eifman tours the U.S.
and Europe with his talented troupe of performers.
- The orchestras and individual artists of St. Petersburg and Moscow have
long standing reputations of excellence. There are gems of the
classical arts scene in Russia that have yet to be discovered.
